How To Drain Tofu

Tofu and I have never jived well . . .

My previous experiments left me with wet soggy meals that nobody ate.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized you had to drain tofu before using it to cook(i.e. bake). Common knowledge to a lot of you . . . Not to Val

Luckily . . . I figured it out . . .

How To Drain Tofu

Unpack your firm bean curd block onto some paper towels after draining the excess water in the package.

Make sure you have a line of 7-8 paper towels to wrap it in and start rolling it up burrito style.

You should have a nice brawny bundle that looks like this.

Now, you can drain tofu anywhere from 15min to overnight. If your pressed for time or want to use your tofu soon, place another plate on top of your burrito and throw some heavy objects on top.

Leave for a while until the paper towels are saturated and your block shrinks down a bit. 15min to 2 hours should do it.

OR . . .

If the overnight method is convenient for you, place in the fridge and put a heavy object on top of the first plate.

Leave overnight and discover a squished block after discarding your drippy paper towels.

You are now free to cut, slice and dice whatever which way to suit your needs.

I’m glad tofu and I are becoming better friends . . . :)

Kauffmans plug huh? Getting Tofu to play well in salad is tough. What do you think?

      Kaufmans ROX!

I think tofu in salad is the best way to use it! Cut it up in blocks and let it marinate in your favorite sauce (BBQ, buffalo, honey mustard, curry sauce) and bake it until browned. Top your salad with it as your protein source! :)

  • That is the largest bottle of almond milk I have ever seen!

I tried baking tofu once and it turned out all mushy and not very tasty. Probably because I didn’t press it before cooking. I’ll have to remember that they next time I try it.
