Lazy Girl’s Trail Mix

Chris and I are trying to make sure we eat better in 2011.  Our schedules are so backwards that we only get to eat together twice a week so we usually just fend for ourselves.  Were coming up with plans to make things for ourselves so we always have them available rather than going out to eat.

When we thought about snacks, I suggested a healthy trail mix that we make ourselves.  It couldn’t be that hard right?

Making it ourselves would allow us to control the ingredients and save us some money.

Here is what I used . . .

  • One box Kashi GOLEAN Crunch! in Honey Almond Flax
  • 1/2 container dried cranberry’s
  • 1/2 bag dark chocolate chips.

Um, yeah so all you do is mix them together in a large bag until everything is evenly distributed and eat as you please!

               You can do this!!

What flavor combinations would you come up with?

One of the problems I’ve found with most granolas (and go lean crunch) is that they are very high in sugars. My parents were from California in the 70′s, and our go to snack was GORP (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts).

I got Mark Bitman’s Food Matters Cookbook for Christmas, and it has several variations of GORP listed. There are tons of ingredients to include in many different combinations including banana chips, chopped dates, any nut, granola (you can find low sugar varieties in bulk at a lot of health food stores), coconut, and lots of others. I need to make some up for myself!

      I agree!

This is exactly why it’s called lazy girls mix instead of healthy girls mix. I needed something quick and cheap and the kashi was the best option I had.

      Thanks for the tip :)

  • Awesome! I love putting cereal in my trail mix — especially cinnamon-flavored ones, like Puffins. Yummm. I also agree with Audrey — Bittman’s GORP is really fun.

Haha, that’s definitely a lazy recipe — but tasty for sure!

I am obsessed with dried cranberries — and other dried fruits for that matter. I put them in everything. On oatmeal? Check! On salads? Check! In grains (rice, quinoa, etc)? Check! On granola, on yogurt, etc. etc.
