Under The Sea

Sorry about my lack of blogging.  I’m still not 100% well and I am trying to find a way to balance posting into an already hectic life so please bear with Smile

Recently, we had our Sea Vegetable class at Natural Gourmet.  I really got a kick out of this class.  Sea Vegetables are so damn good for you!  In a nutshell, they . . .

{Detox Your Body . . . especially from hard metals}

{Have TONS of minerals and trace minerals from the ocean which is important as soil on land is depleting very fast of these}

{Are known to help with MANY ailments from asthma, colitis, cancer, female reproductive disorders . . . you name it!}

We went over the main Sea Vegetables and tried each one as we went along.  I think I am partial to them because they are very salty and I Red heart salt!

After we learned, it was our turn to start using them to make a few dishes.

Sushi

Chef Melanie showed us how to make a vegetarian sushi roll with brown sushi rice. The above picture is the roll she made.

Now its our turn!

Did you know that sushi rice is just sticky rice with vinegar?

Here is my avocado roll.  The knife I used wasn’t sharp enough to slice through the Nori, so it got a bit smushy.

It tasted excellent!

The class also made miso soup and coffee and coconut custard using Agar Agar flakes (vegetarian gelatin).

I really want to start incorporating more Sea Vegetables in my diet ASAP.  I really enjoy the taste and the benefits are totally worth it.  I’ll start with getting my hands on a package of  ORGANIC Nori first Smile

Have you ever eaten sea vegetables before?  What do you think?

  • Sea veggies! Love em. Very prevalent in Korean cooking (my husband’s Korean). I had never thought about it before, but I think you’re right — they are so flavorful because they are naturally salty!

  • Neat!

    My library received a couple copies of a Native Alaska cancer guide–essentially foods found in nature to eat to keep the body healthy while undergoing cancer treatment–and seaweed was a big part of the diet.

    The take the seaweed here and dry it so its little crunchy bushels. If I find some, I’ll take a picture for you.

    oh wow, i would love to take a cooking class, especially in sushi. never had sea vegetables before, except for nori, if that counts.:)

    • Val says:

      Nori totally counts!

      In fact, I got some yesterday that came in little packages that were spicy. Im sure I looked like a weirdo eating it, but Im growing to love that oceany taste.

  • so cool! I’ve always wanted to try to make sushi but have always been very intimidated by them. I love sushi. There are some great sushi restaurants in Athens, GA (where I am from), however, it is hard to find sushi in New Hampshire!

    • Val says:

      Ill be honest,

      I dont really eat TRUE sushi.

      Im all about the avocado and vegetarian type rolls. I tried spicy tuna and spicy salmon once . . . but they tasted kind of bland and slimy!

  • Gosh, you are so brave!!!! :) Great pix too. Thanks for sharing. BLESSINGS!

  • I love sea vegetables!! I’ve not had many… what I can find at WF. Nerves at first quickly subsided, and I found they’re really good.

    I understand the challenge in finding a comfortable posting schedule in a very busy life. We should discuss strategies. It’s not easy.

    • Val says:

      Good for you for trying them out!

      I found a lot at WF too, but they are so damn expensive!!

      I found a Japanese market way up north that I want to go to that has a bunch of varietys for way cheaper.

      I gotta figure out when to go!!
